It seems to me that our society, as a whole, has the opinion that Autism doesn’t affect me personally…

I have to admit that I thought the very same way until my son began to act autistic back in 2001. At that time I wasn’t even sure what autism was. Today most people are afraid of autism – afraid of what they don’t know – afraid of the misinformation and, yes, afraid that (somehow) their afflicted child has autism because it’s their fault!

Autism is caused by a suppressed immune system and, yes, indirectly, we do carry some of the guilt. WHY is it that we have allowed the world to become so toxic – to the point that the toxic waste dump in our air, our water, our land and even the food we eat – is literally killing us from the inside out?

Are you aware that over 80,00 neurotoxins are in use today and that only 12 (not a misprint) have been tested for there damaging affects on humans? Just to clarify: neurotoxins KILL brain cells. Is this really a chance worth taking? The fact that no one is doing much of anything about regulating the billions of tons of the garbage polluting our world speaks for itself. (Oh sure, there’s talk… someone show me some action!)

So… what can we do? We can start by detoxifying our bodies, our homes and our environments – to the extent that we are able. We can ‘go green’ and we can help the next generation by having a little more consideration for their well-being. The world we change could be our own!

I believe that, in order for our body’s immune system to do ‘it’s’ job, we have focus on defending it. From the inside out, my immune system is healthier than ever and my son’s autism is virtually unnoticeable thanks to the glutathione accelerator that has changed our lives. Today I read an article where one in four parents believed that their child became a member of the Autistic community because of a reaction to a routine vaccination.

In this article Dr. Gary L. Freed, a professor of pediatrics at the University of Michigan was quoted as saying, Fortunately, they are still overwhelmingly vaccinating their children. They… obviously meaning the parents. I would be interested to know what percentage of they happen to be pediatricians. Humm..

Dr. Freed, I would also like to ask you, Fortunately for who? Certainly not fortunately for the children whose lives become permanently difficult. Certainly not fortunately for the parents who spend their life and often their live savings to do anything and everything it takes to help their child.

Barbara Loe Fisher created the National Vaccination Information Center to provide unbiased information about routine vaccinations. Karen Simmons created Autism Today to provide unbiased information about Autism so individuals can make intelligent choices. What do they (and countless others who are sharing the truth) hope to gain? These women are true heroes to me – women who are willing to risk it all to help others.

Dr. Freed and countless doctors like him have created… what? Have I missed something? The only data I have seen and read that comes from pro-vaccine doctors is slanted, unproven and often substantiated with “test results” – often created by vaccine manufacturers themselves.

Many in the medical group have banded together to tarnish one of their own! This doctor has substantial proof but it didn’t look good for the Big Pharma. Dr. Andrew Wakefield, another hero willing to risk it all to help others, literally tells the story of my own son and thousands of other children around the world. It’s unclear just when the government and the doctors will begin to listen to the parents (who spend billions each year trying to help their vaccine injured children) instead of the Big Pharmas (who make billions in profits each year from vaccinations). Today I watched this video trailer: http://tinyurl.com/ydf3r24.  I was / am so reminded of my son Tanner. People with these types of  visual abilities are what I call Earth Changers. Temple is able to see beyond the shallow realm that you and I see. She is able to see beyond two-dimensional images and create a world in her mind that most of us can’t comprehend.

My son Tanner is currently working on a science fair project, “How To Replace Fossil Fuel with Algae Fuel”. His project was first named “How To Replace Fossil Fuel with Kelp Fuel” but he has since learned that “Kelp” was limiting. “Some plants have higher concentrations of oil, mom.” he informed me.  “Oh, sure…” I replied, trying to stay in the conversation. “So, would you need to use several different plants to make the kind of fuel you want?” I asked. I thought it was a pretty good question.

“I’d probably cross-pollinate plants to get the best one and I’d use the right kind of fertilizer,” he replied. “Did you know that I am going to reduce the amount of waste because I’m going to use poop from animals and from people to grow my algae! The whole world is going to be better!” Sometimes truth is funnier than fiction I thought to myself…

Only this isn’t fiction. Algae can thrive in the worst of conditions… using waste water and waste products. Increasing the production of a cleaner, greener fuel and reducing the amount of waste that is building up on our beautiful planet…. hummm…. From my point of view, it appears to be the best of both worlds and I am really learning to appreciate the concept!

Tanner has been researching his ideas and he has landed on a few sites that have become his favorites. http://www.greenchipstocks.com/ is one of his favorites. It seems that the experts are a few steps ahead of him but I have no doubt that Tanner will be corroborating with many soon.

Just like Temple Grandin my son can see images that I can only dream off. Helping him to chase his rainbow will help me to see the world more clearly. Will I ever see like Temple Grandin or my son? I hope so. I know that the more I do to help share their magical accomplishments the closer I will come!



“It’s not time to relax” say intelligence officials today. A new video that is presumed to originate from Osama Bin Laden hints of imminent danger and the world is on red alert.

How does this added stress affect you? Are you glued to the TV and are you receiving constant updates so that you are in the know? Are you able to share past experiences of 9-11 with such detail that your avid audience sits in wonderment? Are you, like most Americans, able to recall the exact moment when you first heard about 9-11? Are we destined to see a repeat performance?

If we are filled with fear, you can bet that our spectrum children know it. Not only do they know it  – they can feel it… Our emotions are not only worn on our proverbial  sleeves – our emotions are usually  projected (like verbal projectile vomit) onto our unsuspecting children with such force that they are unable to contain their reactions. “My stomach hurts”,  “I’m too sick to go to school today”, fighting with their siblings, nightmares and even true illnesses all originate from stress.

How often do we recount tragic moment by moment events that happen in our everyday life? Our spectrum children only need to hear them once. Like an audio recorder, they are able to store this data into their think tank for future reference at any given moment. Unfortunately, they are usually not able to control what goes into their think tank or what will trigger the given moment when the information resurfaces… that is our job. Is it fair to feed our children negativity and ugliness and expect positive beauty to shine back?

As a parent I have to be aware of what I say around my children. Their little minds are being formed by my words and actions every single day. If I am feeling fearful or scared the chances are that they are, too. As an adult, I am generally able to deal with these situations in a mature manner. I know that the only way my children will learn to do the same is by watching good examples.

We can not change the past – we can only learn from it. We can not predict the future – we can only prepare for it by being aware and by being the best that we can be. We certainly can not help our children to be confidant if we live a fearful and angry life.

Regarding Osama Bin Laden’s New Terror Tape: I am thankful that our government officials take this kind of message seriously. I’m even more thankful that I am not a government official. I am praying the Serenity Prayer for us all and I hope that you will do the same, too.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change;
the courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.



Several years ago when my son was going through test after test to determine what had happened to cause him to act so strangely I convinced myself that his problems were due to food allergies.

Despite the fact that test after test came back “Inconclusive” I witnessed strange behaviors on an increasingly “regular” basis… often his strange behavior increased shortly after a meal!

Time and again I would feed my son the healthiest home-made food that was free of sugar, free of preservatives and free of anything artificial. What was the connection? Was food playing some kind of role? My writer friend Carol Fenster, author of several gluten-free books, seemed to think so! I purchased Cooking Free: 200 Flavorful Recipes for People with Food Allergies and Multiple Food Sensitivities and began to understand what food sensitivities really are!

I learned that common celiac disease symptoms include:
  • chronic diarrhea
  • constipation
  • abdominal pain
  • gas
  • bloating

My son regularly suffered from ALL of the above. According to Carol and countless additional resources that I discovered, wheat could be responsible for causing many of my son’s problems.

Removing wheat seemed like an insurmountable task. Everything seemed to have wheat in it… or at least, everything that he loved! There  just had to be a way to find help for him so I set out to find it!

Before long I determined that my son was not and still is not allergic to wheat. I believe (to this day) that he has an intolerance to the wheat proteins, known as gluteomorphines! After removing wheat from my son’s diet he had better focus within 24 hours! He has since remained on a gluten-free diet for nearly six years!

Although removing wheat proved to be a big step in the right direction I still wanted to know more about the sensitivities he was experiencing. I found a very interesting site that helped me understand food sensitivities and allergies even more!

We tried the the Caveman Diet. I believe that it answered many questions for us.  I still do the pulse test on a regular basis.

How do children on the spectrum learn to interact with other children in appropriate ways? What is it that “clicks” their gears into movement? It’s hard to understand the way their processing works and even harder to guess what may or may not interrupt their thought patterns.

Sometimes I see my son tackle challenges that could stop another child in his or her tracks… coming up with a science fair project titled “How to Replace Fossil Fuel with Kelp” stops me in my tracks! Was it always this way…? Certainly not! Getting him to focus long enough to learn how to tie his shoes was once a challenge bigger than climbing Mount Everest!

My son used to live in a confusing world of Autism… from the day when he was mercury poisoned at nearly two-years-old until fairly recently when the transformation of improving his immune system really took effect. Thanks, in part, to improving his immune system with the glutathione accelerator, (full details under The Supplement on my main menu) he has become much more cognitive and it is much easier to connect with him and to watch him learn.

But, is having a healthy body enough? It is a fabulously good start and, for my son, it has literally changed our lives as he is now able to focus and think clearly. The next step was to connect with this renewed focusing ability. The basics are always good: games the focus on teaching him to think for himself; reading books that are interesting to him; physically challenging exercises and social events that broaden his awareness.

But, what happens to parents with special needs children when the opportunities are simply not available?

Recently my sons and I have had the opportunity to review an answer to this question for many! Mary Beth Palo, the Founder and President of Watch Me Learn, is the mother of an autistic son who is a visual learner and the sole reason for the creation of the Watch Me Learn videos.

Classic videos teach children how to interact with others, understand appropriate actions and how to thrive in a world that is often otherwise confusing and uncomfortable to them. Every year we celebrate Christmas by visiting a different country – right in our own home! We eat that country’s traditional food, decorate and dress to fit the part and, best of all, we all learn more about traditions celebrated by others around the world! This year Sweden was the chosen country so we started the morning off with Swedish pancakes. They are more like crepes that we know. The traditional filling is often sauteed apples with cinnamon or the fruit filling you like. Unsweetened whipped cream is then added on top. Yum!

Because Tanner can not eat wheat I came up with a recipe for him. The results were met with a big smile. He ate three crepes with apple filling.

Here is the recipe:

First, take two large apples and thinly slice them. In a small pan add the apples, 2 T of butter (or margarine if you can not have dairy) and 1 t cinnamon. Place the lid on top and simmer on low while cooking the crepes.

Crepes:
Blend everything together well in one bowl. It just doesn’t get much easier than that!

3 eggs
2/3 C Amaranth flour
1/3 C Coconut flour
1 1/2 C Milk (we used Vances DariFree)
2 T Sugar
1 T Cooling Oil
1/2 t Baking Powder

Using a small (9″) round pan, I sprayed the bottom of the hot pan with cooking oil. Pour 1/2 C of the batter into the center and rotate to spread it out. When the top is covered with air bubbles it should be read to flip. Carefully turn the crepe over (they tend to stick just a bit – it’s best to do this slowly so that they don’t fold). Cook the second side for about a minute or so. These probably won’t store real well because they are so thin but I was able to store the left overs between parchment paper until lunch. My son had the remaining few left-overs with more apples for desert.

Whip cream (NOT Casein-free) can be added on top for those who can have dairy products.

It has been a month of cold, colds, germs and viruses… more so than I can remember in a long time! I simply have not had the energy to keep up with everything and I apologize that the month has gone by with only one blog post! My newest book The Journey, Home from Autism has arrived and the response is amazing. I had a woman comment to me just yesterday that she had just read my book and she said to me, “Your book taught me how to understand my son and, even better, how to understand myself!” Interesting. Yesterday my eight-year-old son Oliver wanted to make and decorate gingerbread cookies. I have yet to find a gluten-free gingerbread cookie for Tanner (my ten-year-old) so I started with Oliver’s recipe and (after mixing things up a bit) came up with this one:

Mix all together:
1 1/2 C Amaranth flour
1/2 C White Rice Flour
1/4 C Tapioca Flour
1/2 t Salt
3/4 t Ginger
1/2 t Baking Soda
1/2 C Brown Sugar
1/2 t Cloves
1/2 t Cinnamon

Beat together in separate bowl:
1/2 C Margarine or butter
1/2 C Molasses
1 egg

Blend two mixtures together. Let sit in refrigerator for about an hour to firm up. We tried rolling the dough out on parchment paper (floured with rice flour) but when we used the gingerbread men and the Christmas tree cookie cutters the cookies wouldn’t hold together well. We might have had better luck adding a bit more flour or letting the dough cool for awhile longer. Oliver’s cookies were done and Tanner was ready so we came up with plan “B”:

We rolled small balls of the dough and flattened to about 1/3 inch thick. The boys decorated the faces after they cooked. Or, even better idea – with the ball idea – they made snowmen with three balls of dough.

Bake them at 350 for about 15 – 20 minutes. Because the dough is dark it’s somewhat difficult to see that they are browning. Watching near the edges of the cookies is a good indicator. Give them plenty of room to spread and let them cook on the cookie sheet (directly on the parchment paper). Let them cool for about 5 minutes before removing them. Decorate them after they’ve cooled and store in an airtight container.

Enjoy them and Merry Christmas to one and all!



The Journey, Home from Autism has arrived! This book started out as a 30 page hand out and now is a 312 book that covers everything we learned, did, experienced and found to be helpful.

Funny how things work though… the books arrived the day before Thanksgiving. We enjoyed a houseful of company on Thanksgiving and had even more fun on Friday – spending most of the day at Ocean Journey, here in the Denver area. The sad thing – I came down with a cold virus on Saturday and the boys followed. First, Tanner came home early from school on Monday. Second, Oliver stayed home today.

We all had a bit of a fever this morning so going outside didn’t sound appealing. Instead, the three of us put up the Christmas tree today, read a silly book about Chester the Cricket and cooked orange chicken with rice for dinner. All in all, we are feeling better and our fevers have broken – many thanks I believe, due to taking Grapefruit Seed Extract. I add 15 drops to a glass of orange juice for myself three times a day and five – ten drops for the boys.

The orange chicken recipe:
2 cups rinsed long grain rice
4 cups orange juice
4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts

Mix the rice and orange juice together in a baking pan. Lay the chicken on top. Cover with foil and bake at 350 for about one hour. Remove the foil and cook for an additional 5 – 10 minutes. Everyone loves this recipe and it couldn’t be simpler!
